Abstract. No abstract provided. A distinction is drawn between the pathology of the fetus and that of the embryo which is referred to as teratology. In the fetus with its differentiated tissues resembling an adult in miniature the reactions of its tissues to poison and infection are similar to those of the adult.
The effects of pathogenic agents in the embryo are the malformation of parts and organs. However, the main value of this book remains, as in the first edition, the author's presentations of embryological and pathological facts and their relations to each other.
During the nineteenth century pathologists showed a great interest in congenital malformations and they made the chief contributions to teratology at that time. Subsequently, Willis described it as rare condition in which a malformed parasitic twin was found inside the body of its partner, usually in the abdominal cavity; Willis defined FIF in as a "mass containing a vertebral axis often associated with other organs or limbs around this axis" (Willis: The Borderland of Embryology and Pathology, ).
